I Am Thankful for A New Day and a New Year

Good Morning!  And, Happy New Year!

I am always amazed at how the marking of a new year on the calendar seems to create a new attitude.  This morning most of us (the AARP-ers) in the neighborhood got together for coffee.  The only real difference between this morning and yesterday is that we are a day older but for some reason all of us are grasping new hopes and dreams for the new year… even at our ages.

It really doesn’t matter how old we are, I suppose.  There is something magic about having to remember to write 2009 instead of 2008.  I love holidays, but there is magic in opening a new calendar.  Attitudes change, for the better in most cases.  Everyone, even if he doesn’t admit it, has made resolutions.  We all pledge to do better and live better this year than last.

There is a positive energy that filled all of us as we slept last night.  As the ladies sat around the table this morning, we talked about all the things we want to to this year.  We didn’t exactly make resolutions.  Instead, we discussed what each of us can do to make a difference this year.  Someone started making a list and all was going well until we ran out of paper.

The final decision was simple.  This year we are going to share our gratitude with others.  Perhaps that sounds a little vague.  It really isn’t.  We look at what makes us grateful for our day and pass it along to others.  Think about that for a minute.  If someone lets you into a line of traffic, all you have to do is to let someone into the line.  If someone smiles, smile back and then find another person to share your smile with.  Just pass it on!  It’s that simple.

You see, the one thing we have learned over the years is that we can share what we have with others and it will come back to us.  What better way to compound the gratitude!

Make today special and if you share the gratitude today there will be more to share tomorrow.

Happy New Year!
