I’m with friends on the beach today, but before I went out to get a good look at the ocean my friend sent me the picture of the walrus. Before I read her email I thought she was trying to send me picture that would make me feel a little cooler. It is hot here!
Anyway, as I read the email I realized that my friend was asking me to go out to the ocean shore to see if I could see a walrus. Well, NO! We don’t have any walruses here. It seems that was the whole point. According to my friend, the companies drilling oil in the Gulf of Mexico have an environmental plan that includes the arctic animals. I picked up the phone to ring her up and to suggest that maybe the “plan” was a global plan. I figure we need to give everyone a break once in a while.
Well, it seems that the walrus was included in Gulf plan. Now, folks. Everyone knows I have been extremely upset by the oil spill. Having grown up on the water I know the impact such negligence can cause. And, yes, I do believe it is criminal. But, we have to consider that if these folks who are doing all the planning and drilling think they may come across a walrus in the Gulf — well, they need a new plan and they need to stop drilling for a while.
I have recognized that I am fighting a losing battle against the oil companies and the government — including President Obama — when it comes to offshore drilling. And, although I am not thrilled by the idea, I will have to accept it. Years ago I would have been far more vocal and much more active. I guess this is a battle for younger folks to fight and obviously, the young ones do not seem to mind. So, I’ll just try to keep my little area of the beach clean and continue to encourage the young beach people to protect the environment.
Okay, folks, that’s it for today. I’m going walrus hunting.
