With Labor Day a few days off, we are expecting a little rain tonight, but sunshine tomorrow and for the rest of the weekend. In other words, Earl has decided to head north and little more to the northeast. That’s a good sign — for us — but, perhaps, not so good for my friends who live on the Outer Banks, just north of here.
Two of our neighbors had headed to the mainland — and to be quite honest, I was thinking about it. But, when you live on a small island or even on the waterfront along the mainland you learn to be cautious but you also learn that sometimes you are just on the cusp. With Hurricane Earl, we have seen the waves begin to look a little angry and of course, we are expecting the high tide to be a little higher than usual. But, all in all we should not see any destruction and probably not any noticeable erosion.
One thing I have been asked recently is why those of us who live here — even if it is only part time — don’t move somewhere else. Of course, that has been a question I have heard all my life. I suppose living here is like living life. Most of the time it is wonderful. In fact, it can be wonderful for a decade or two before there are a few days that turn life upside down. And, yeah! Sometimes the repairs are minor and occasionally, maybe once or twice in an entire lifetime, it is like starting all over again. More often than not life is quiet and peaceful. So, I suppose, when Mother Nature takes her toll it is a reminder not to take all those beautiful days and years for granted.
Here’s the thing. No matter where you live there is something that is less than perfect. Life isn’t perfect.
But, for this weekend, life will be about as perfect as it can be. Sunshine and a day on the water. No tourist traffic to speak of and neighbors partying from house to house all up and down the island, eating good food all along the way and shagging in the street when the sun goes down. Oh, yeah! Life is good. And, for that I am thankful.
Happy Labor Day.

good to hear that you were lucky there, not having a visit of Earl ! up here not far from us, two houses were thrown out in the sea and a man, our age (60), was saved out since he stayed at the upper floor, and people are evacuated in that village ! so no, we cannot take a good day for granted, just enjoy every day with gratitude as you do and I try to do the best I can, for instance when I was up in the mountains today picking blueberries and cloud berries and looking at the new snow ! have a nice weekend overall love Niels
