It’s been a long time coming. We have had so much rain lately that we are actually out of the rain deficit for the year. Of course, with summer looming in the not so distant future we will sink back into a rain deficit within no time at all.
But, for today the sun is out. Taking a walk this morning was one of the most pleasant outdoor things I have done in a long time. I went by myself this morning. In fact, I sneaked out very early and had the entire sidewalk to myself. The sidewalk is positioned such that I get a few rays of the early morning sunshine. It felt good, really good.
Now, to be quite honest I’m not one of those sit in the sun and get tanned kind of people. I have done my fair share of time basking in the sunlight — when I lived on the beach. But, those days are gone — for now. One day I will get back to my favorite spot near the ocean. But, for today I was just thrilled to catch a few rays as I walked from the shade to the sunshine and back to the shade.
I would be telling a big one if I said that I really wanted to go for a walk this morning. I had to force myself to put on those walking shoes. Actually, I think I wanted to go for the walk. I just didn’t want to get dressed for the walk, especially the shoes.
The temperature was remarkably cool for this time of year. I’m sure that 42 is not out of the normal limits somewhere, but not here. With the wind blowing as I started out I should have taken a jacket, but I didn’t. Anyway, as thankful as I am for a day of sunshine, I wasn’t in the mood to get dressed at 6:30 this morning. Maybe I thought I would have preferred a second cup of coffee.
However, I did what I got up to do. I went for my morning walk. And, what a delight the walk was! I began to notice that the rain was paying off great dividends. Sometimes you just have to make yourself do something and once you get over the dread of getting started the “doing” can present surprises.
Below is a picture of my morning surprise. I pass this stone wall each morning. But today the stone wall was not just stone with green slipping through the cracks. This morning the sunlight showed off the colors I had been waiting all spring to see — sunshine yellow topping the green, peeking out of the cracks.
I have to admit that I had to look for something to be thankful for this early morning. I was looking for something small, just anything. Instead, I found a wall of beauty with delicate colors and thorny cactus and spring green. What a wonderful day to be out for a walk! What a wonderful surprise nature provided!
Sometimes when we force ourselves to get started — to do something we do not want to do — we find happiness and something magnificent to be thankful for. This morning I found a smile along my walk. For that I am thankful.
