It has been said that changing jobs or losing one’s job, moving, and the death of a spouse or loved one are among the top stress creating events in our lives. Well, I suppose that is quite so in some cases. I am sure I would be totally stressed if I lost a loved one. The only job I have is the one I created with websites and it can be stressful, especially since my income is dependent on them at this time in my life. And, moving…. Ah, yes! Moving!
Well, in my case I am looking forward to change. I’m getting too old to care about “stuff” and all the daily hassles that come with maintaining everything. Moving is change I am looking forward to. I have thought about it for a long time. In fact, Laury and I exchanged a few emails about making a move. I am somewhat envious of Laury who just picked up her goodies and moved to France. I remember when I picked up my few belongings and moved to the UK. Those eight years were glorious. But, times have changed and so has my life. Now, it is time to think small — as far as housing — and enjoy the wonderful adventures of retirement.
My husband and I have been talking for some time about becoming Florida residents. We don’t know where we want to go, well, not exactly. We do know that we want minimal square footage and no more than two bedrooms. Am I sounding as if I don’t want visitors? Well, maybe. Anyway, we have started checking out areas of Florida as we begin to get really serious about making a move. Of course, looking does not create stress. Being patient does — at least for me.
Here’s the real bottom line. I am looking forward to a change. It is time to take away some of the mental and physical stress and enjoy warmer weather year round. Just saying….
I am hoping to be moved by June. That seems like forever, even to an old lady. But, the reality is that June will probably arrive before I am ready to make the move. There is always so much to do once the decision is made. Getting mentally ready for a more casual home may be harder than it sounds. Although I am not too formal — after all, I wear overalls almost daily — I have always found myself living in a home with the formal living room and the formal dining room. I’m giving that up! I swear! I’m going for a casual, open floor plan.
Now, all of you who are regulars at this site may be wondering why I am putting out my goal to move now. The truth is that by telling the world, I will feel that I am being held accountable. And, like everyone, I need to be held accountable from time to time. I need a time line. I need a goal. I need to get into action to accomplish my goal. So, there! That’s it. I’m going to make a major life change and today I am thankful that we have finally made the decision. I am thankful for change.

Hi Maya, Niels calling from San Francisco, on my first vacation trip to US (only one week), your moving plan sounds like a great change ! for you young guys ! yes, in our spirits we are young, even if we are 49′ers, right ? and a casual one floor, a very good solution ! In our farm house in Denmark, our retirement place, is also a one-floor house (well we have a roof, but not for living , only for storage ! ) I wish you an overall nice Christmas and New Year, you and your husband , Niels
