I Am Thankful for Fog

by Maya on December 14, 2009

Call me crazy (if you haven’t already) but I really enjoyed the fog we experienced last night.  The night actually warmed up a little, but the dampness left a bit of a chill.

Anyway, it was really foggy.  By the time I was rolling the garbage container to the sidewalk I could barely see my hand in front of my fact.  But, I could see the fog rolling.  Now, isn’t that a wonder?  Just imagine actually seeing fog move in front of your eyes.

Most of us take the air for granted.  After all it was here before us and if all goes well, it will be here when we are gone.  On sunny days we don’t actually “see” the air — unless we catch that special moment when we see the sun’s rays at a certain angle.  Then we can see little particles that show up within the light of the rays.

Last night it was dark and heavily overcast.  And, I could see the clouds of fog all around me.  It was fun to walk into the clouds, to feel the slight difference in the weight of the air and the dampness.  Perhaps, what is so amazing as I think about it is that the “air” was right here on the ground.  It wasn’t somewhere in the distance like most clouds.  It was here.

Okay, so maybe you aren’t as thrilled about fog as I.  But, it is an overwhelming experience to know that what is “out there” can come so close, close enough for us to touch and to touch us.  Maybe it is just that sometimes we take ourselves too seriously.  Sometimes we put too much importance on ourselves.  Sometimes we just forget that we are so very tiny in the overall scheme of things.

When you walk into a cloud of moving fog, or sit on the beach with nothing but ocean for miles and miles ahead, or when you look into sky standing in Montana, or look straight up the side of the Rocky Mountains or stand on top of a peak in Switzerland looking for miles and miles, or are so close to the north pole that the sun shines all day and night and then there is darkness for days and nights — when you experience small kisses from the universe you know we should all be so thankful for just being a part of it.

This is a magical world filled with mysteries that will not be answered in our lifetimes or in centuries or maybe even millions of years.  Whether you are a believer or not, it makes no difference.  The experience of being kissed by the universe tells you that we live in a world that is awesome.  I am so thankful for that feeling of awe.  I am thankful for fog.
