I Am Thankful for “Friends” in the Grocery Check-Out Line

by Maya on November 25, 2008

I was thankful for many things yesterday, but extra minutes ran short.  There is much to do getting ready for Thanksgiving Day.

Today I took a few minutes to run pick up a few things for the family.  And, there in the grocery store check-out line, in the midst of the hustle and bustle, I met two of the nicest ladies one could ever want to meet.

The first lady I met was so kind.  I had three items and she had a cart full.  While I was actually enjoying the wait in line, the lady in front of me insisted that I go ahead of her.  That is such a courtesy that is so unexpected these days, especially as everyone seems to be in a hurry to get the turkeys home.

Well, as anyone who knows me, either in person or through these writings, would guess I subscribe to the Will Rogers theory that a stranger is a friend I haven’t met yet.  Needless to say, I found myself nicely placed between two energetic women, both full of generosity and energy.  Actually, I do believe that good energy comes from generosity.

As we began talking I would have sworn that I had known these two ladies for more than a minute.  And, both were such an inspiration.  Each was purchasing goodies for those less fortunate.  One was taking groceries to the Community Kitchen, the other to neighbors who lived on either side of her.  That really is the true spirit of Thanksgiving.

Well, I would so love to share more about the encounter and my new friends, except it is time to prepare dinner for the family.  I will end this by saying that there is no gift so wonderful as finding others who care about those who all too often are unable to care for themselves.  In these economic times we don’t have to look too far.  These two ladies had looked.

Some of us look on special occasions.  But, if I may be so bold, I suggest that we should take a cue from the two women in the grocery market.  I am sure they don’t wait for holidays to feel the spirit of giving.  What a wonderful day!

So, to everyone I will say, “Happy Thanksgiving!”  Especially to my new acquaintances, Tamy and Cathy.
