I Am Thankful for Ken and a Haircut

by Maya on July 14, 2009

“The time has come the Walrus said….”  Well, I can’t remember the rest of the quote, but the time had come this morning to get a hair cut.  And, I have to say that I am so thankful for Ken — the wonderful man who cut my hair and will package it for Locks of Love.

Some of the regular readers may remember my commenting on a couple of older women who were exchanging comments on my bib overalls and long hair one day when I was out with the kids.  I wonder what they would say today.  I’m home and back in my bib overalls, but without the hair.

The time had come — and none too soon for me — to have the hair cut.  It had been growing for about two years.  When I decided to grow it, it was no more than two inches long all over.  I do love short hair that requires no effort on my part.  But, with so many family members who have suffered with cancer over the years, I decided to grow some hair for Locks of Love.  That’s the least I could do — and it cost nothing and requires little effort.  Well, as it started growing it did require more effort, taking hours to dry after a good washing.  But, I decided to stick with it.

Anyway, it has been particularly hot and humid lately and with such thick hair I was getting really hot when outside.  I tried the hair clips, etc. but to be honest my hair would fall down due to the weight and thickness.  I tried the pony tail, but I was never quite comfortable looking like a teeny bopper at age 60.

Last night I washed my hair and tried to blow it dry.  Well, it wasn’t quite dry when I was ready to go to bed so I braided it as I usually do before getting into bed.  When it was down I would wake up with it wrapped around my neck — not a really good feeling.  Anyway, this morning I decided that I had to make a change.

Ken told me to come on to his business and he would cut it.  I guess he knows me too well.  I’m not usually an impatient person, but I guess it is a fact that once I decide to get my hair cut I am not beyond taking the scissors to it on my own.  More than once over the years, Ken has had to “fix” it after I chopped on it.

Well, today I feel a couple of pounds lighter.  Ken whacked it off.  Maybe one day I will post a picture of the new cut, but for today — well, for today, this is what is now going to someone else.  And, you know, white hair is really good to give as it turns out.  Seems that most hair given to the Locks of Love or the Cancer Society isn’t white although many of the patients are older and the hair they lost due to chemo was white.

I’ll keep my eyes open to see if anyone else is wearing my hair in the future.  I do hope they enjoy it more than I did.  But, for today I am thankful for Ken and a good haircut.  By the way, it really doesn’t take much effort to give something to someone in need.

I’ve done the opposite Maya! When I was working like a dog I had my hair very short! As time went on I told myself, when it was long enough to wrap in a bun I’d move to France! It didn’t happen exactly like that, but now my hair is longer than it’s been since my college days when I got my Toni Tenille look!-Great cause and beautiful hair! You are an inspiration!-Laury

Laury,

Great to hear from you, again. Back in my college days, when my hair was black, I could sit on it. I cut my hair so short that it was about two inches all over — in the longer areas. At least I got to class on time. For 40 years I kept it short.

But, with so many people in my family experiencing cancer treatments and so little I could do to help them, I decided that the least I could do would be to grow hair so someone else could enjoy it eventually.

Maybe I will let it grow again, if that is the pre-requisite for moving to France. :) Actually, I would be happy to be back in the UK.

And, Toni Tenille! Oh my, you are sharing your age… and perhaps a little of your experience! As you can tell from the picture, I could easily go for the Janis Joplin look. Now, perhaps I have shared too much about myself.

Thank you for your kind words. Now… about moving to France….
