Well, all my friends are not necessarily people. It seems that with spring in the air, I am having more and more visitors that linger — and eventually decide to stay. Of course, some may not stay forever, just a little too long to call them visitors.
About a month ago I noticed something dart across the driveway as I walked toward the car. It was much faster than my eyes could focus. Reaching senior citizen status does have some drawbacks. Anyway, I tried to follow the flash just to determine what it was. With so much wooded area behind our house and the neighboring houses, it could have been almost anything. And, to be honest I would have been delighted to discover that the dart was anything — except a ‘possum. Yep, there are some of those ugly old things that create a mess from time to time, but for the most part I do believe they hide during the daylight hours.
I never found “the dart” that first day. Several days later I noticed another dart across the yard. All I could tell was that it was furry, black and had a tail. While I wasn’t exactly sure what it was, I decided to believe it to be a cat. Okay — so based on that decision, I put out a few table scraps after dinner that night. I don’t know what ate them, but they were gone when I went back out to see if anything remained on the paper towel.
Like I said, that was a month ago. Well, today….

Either cats slow down faster than the rest of us or this pretty new friend has decided to stay. It (don’t know if “it” is a he or she yet) won’t let me touch him. But, it surely doesn’t spook any more. In fact, it seems to pose pretty well.
I had told my husband that we were not going to take in any more “things.” The big disqualifiers are — if it eats, poops, and doesn’t have a job, it can’t stay. Seems those disqualifiers have become the qualifiers. “It” is staying.
As always, I am thankful for a new friend, even if he does wander off to greener pastures in the future. I just hope “it” will become friendly enough that I can take him to be spayed or neutered before he (she) moves on. For now, I am just enjoying another gift of beauty that came to visit.
