I Am Thankful for Old People with Young Minds

by Maya on August 20, 2009

Today is the 20th — just three months away from International Overalls Day.  It’s no secret that I love my bibs.  I have a pair for almost every occasion.  Most of my favorites are beyond salvation.  I wear them when I garden.  I wear them when I paint.  I wear them when I cut steel.  I wear them.  That’s it.

I had been out to feed Oliver his afternoon snack after working in the garden.   He is spoiled already.  He is present for an 8:00 a.m. breakfast before a nap, then a hunting expedition.  He returns for an afternoon snack before taking a second nap and then heading out and about for his walk-about.  Most evenings he’s back by 7:00 p.m. for dinner.  I’m trained to feed him on a schedule I guess.

Who would have guessed that my husband was hiding with the camera in the potting shed?  Anyway…. The picture is terrible — a very bad angle.  I swear I am not fat!  But, my husband thought it would be cute to catch me coming in the door.  Not cute!  But, a little bit of reality.

Caught off guard!
Caught off guard!

Anyway, the point is not to show off Oliver or my bad self after a hot afternoon in the garden.  Oh, my!  I am dirty!

To the point!  I was talking to my mother-in-law — not always an easy task — about having an International Overalls Day on November 20th.  She sat there for a minute and seemed to be less than interested.  Then, she looked up and me and said, “You know that’s my birthday.”
“Yep, it is.”
“Do you think you could get me a pair of those overalls for my birthday this year?”
“If that’s what you want.”
“You always look so comfortable.  Maybe at 89 I will be ready for my first pair!”
Ya think?  I have already bought them.  In fact, as soon as she mentioned that she would love to have a pair of overalls I went out and got them for her.  I’m going to save them until the big day.  But, folks — this is a landmark occasion.  We are going to celebrated the 1st International Overalls Day and an 89 year old is going to put on her first pair.
Now, that is something to be thankful for.
You have to smile when someone reaching for 90 is ready for a pair of overalls.

wow, I don’t know what to say, almost crying, it is so fantastic to hear this, and I don’t know if you saw this kelsey photo I mentioned in my post yesterday with overalls going 3 generations back ! and I like the photo of you, you look wonderful ! I am sort of envious in a funny way, since in my job, I have to be proper (=clean) so I am so happy when I can get into my oldest overalls and work in the garden and feel comfortable, might be crazy, but anyway I hope to at least see a photo of your mother in law in overalls sometime and it would still be fantastic to meet you all ! very warm hug from Tromsø with new snow on the top of the mountain today !

Thank you, Niels!

Do not be envious — or, maybe you should be. I spent too many years dressed for work, the real job. But, there are benefits to retirement. Wearing my bibs is one of them.

I stay dirty most of the time, either in the garden, painting floorcloths (wiping the brushes on my overalls), or cutting steel for sculptures.

I will try to get a picture of my mother-in-law in her overalls. She is a bit camera shy these days, but maybe the 20th of November will be a good day for her.

Saw the picture. I think our family goes overall crazy every other generation. But, I had one pair that was so old and so worn out that one of the kids suggested his mother could “patch” my behind. Oh, well.

Maya, just came back from wonderful classical concert (I’m not only into overalls !) but I am also looking forward to retire, perhaps in 2 years from now , when I turn 62, and the funny thing is that as young guy I was scared to death to get dirty and now I prefer getting dirty and have fun with that! and compared to your mother in law you and I are young people, so hopefully many more years to enjoy good life in dirty overalls ! and apropos patches, some times I am doing them myself but my wife is better to that kind of stuff and for one christmas a few years ago, she gave me a “bonus card” with 10 patching jobs and I have 5 left and have to consider which part of my 2 oldest overalls should be patched first !

OH MY!! What a lovely story. I am working with Niels (I am the slow one with too many irons in the fire) to pull off this big event. Please let me know if it would be okay to send your mother in law cards on her birthday. I would be honored to mention her in my next blog post about the OVERALL day…which I plan on posting in the next week or so.

Thank you, thank you for sharing!

Susan…. (or June)…. I am the slow one. I have so many irons in so many fires that sometimes I forget which ones I am working on.

Feel free to share the story. I will be looking forward to the post.

Best to you!

Niels is keeping me in the loop here Maya-You look great! You DO NOT look fat! And that’s incredible about your mother-in-law! I have to share a story of yesterday with you too-I’d gone with some friends out on their boat on the river yesterday. I ended up in my short overalls and bathing suit so I had someplace to put my keys and my camera. On the way back in, we’re walking up the bank home. Someone sitting on the bank said something in French, and then changed to English-this very interesting looking man said-I know who you are…it’s your dungarees! Such a reputation! Keep up the good work!

Laury,

Fat? Who really cares at my age? But…..

You know, I do believe we are building a reputation in small pockets. I was in the store yesterday — not in overalls. I spoke to the manager when I walked in and he ignored me. A few minutes later he came over and said, “I didn’t recognize you without your uniform on.”

Well, I do suppose my overalls are my uniform.

Life is good. We have one more convert!

Hi Maya, hope you are having a nice and not too busy weekend ! and I have been thinking of your mother in law and related to a discussion among young overalls fans, who are scared to wear overalls in public ! so I suggest a motto for the overalls day: overalls for all ages ! have a nice Sunday
