I Am Thankful for People Who Take Action

Today has been a rather hard day to come up with a little gratitude.  For years I was very connected to Haiti and still have friends who are.  In fact, I think I wrote an article about one a few weeks ago.

Anyway, the earthquake in Haiti has been on my mind since yesterday.  You see, my friend is on his way back to Haiti to do what he can.  We have not heard from the artisans in Croix-des-Bouquets.  So, rather than go into all the continuing story of the catastrophic quake, today I am thankful for those friends who are on their way to Haiti to help out.

And, I am really thankful for the wonderful friendships that were forged through Fair Trade.  The artisans of Croix-des-Bouquets, Haiti are among some of the most talented people I have ever known.  As most may know, Haiti is an exceptionally poor country.  So, these artisans collect oil drums.  They spend hours opening the oil drums along the seam, hammering the drum into a flat piece of metal, drawing a design in chalk on the metal, then stroke by stroke the design is created with a hammer and chisel.

The Tree of Life with Sun Face is actually made from the top or the bottom of the oil drum.  The round lids measure approximately 36″ in diameter.  The finished sun is almost 36″ across.

The mask to the right is a very typical example of the artwork.

Okay, so I guess I’m dragging out lots of old memories and some beautiful artwork.  But, today I am feeling a little sad because I know that John Sylvestre and some of the other wonderful artisans may be without food, water, electricity, or a home… or worse.

But, on the other hand I am so delighted that Jeff is packing to go help out.  Today I am thankful for those people who “do” rather than wish they did.
