I Am Thankful for Second Chances

by Maya on January 25, 2010

I guess I was thinking about Wednesday night’s State of the Union Address when I thought of Mel and Tim.  Okay, so all you young folks don’t know Mel and Tim.  Guess you don’t know Hall and Oates, either.  :)

Anyway, my friend SinDe who does a lot of her blogging from my house was writing a scathing article on the past year of the Presidency and the Congress.  Needless to say, it has been a major disappointment for all of us who spent endless hours campaigning for President Obama in the heart of a ruby red state.  We knew he would never win in Tennessee.  That’s not being negative.  Anyway you look at it, it is just a fact.

Well, this past year has been the biggest let down for those of us who supported Obama and the Democrats.  Who could have guessed that for an entire year we would be holding our collective liberal breath?  Now, here’s the thing.  We were willing to negotiate and yeah!  We were willing to give in a little more than was comfortable.  Anyway, by now we are all disgusted.  The President hasn’t led the nation as we had hoped.  In fact, it seems that he must have read The Secret or seen the movie and believed it.  You know, put your dreams out there in the universe and POOF!

Maybe I’m just too old to hold onto that fantasy.  I have given up many more over the years.  But, maybe we were hoping for more of a fighter than a negotiator.  Now, I have nothing against negotiations.  But, you have to have people who are willing to negotiate.

Anyway, that is not the point.  Read SinDe’s blog if you want the down and dirty on the past year.  She included a youtube video in the blog post.  It isn’t about politics.  It’s about starting over, giving it another try.  I guess there was no negotiations between us either.  She picked the Hall & Oates version (the original, I think) and I picked Mel and Tim’s version.

As I listened to the song I realized how very thankful I am for second chances.  You know, sometimes we just don’t get it right the first time around.  And, sometimes we need second chances.

Anyway, I’m including the two videos.  The first is Sin’s choice.  The second is mine.  Maybe I grew up with beach music — and I’m not talking the Beach Boys.  I’m talking about good old soul and blues music, the kind that inspired dirty dancing — not the movie, but the real thing.

By the way, for those who grew up along the southeastern coast of the U.S. you know all about shagging.  But here is a point I must make.  Do not confuse shagging (the dance) with shagging if you are in the U.K.  I’ll tell that story another day.  But, for this evening, enjoy Hall & Oates or Mel and Tim.
