Okay! Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!
Even the older folks got excited today. It snowed. Now, it didn’t snow a lot according to some. But, it snowed enough. Even the roads are covered and that seldom happens around here. For once it is real snow, not ice.
The television weather man who lives just a few blocks down the street has been talking about the possibility of snow most of the week. To be honest, none of us really believed him. The last time he and the other local weather people predicted snow it never happened. Well, I suppose it happened somewhere, just not in our neighborhood.
I was out early this morning. But, I’m out early most mornings. I like to do the shopping and running around before most of the family is up and moving about. So, today I went out to do a little grocery shopping and there was that wonderful feeling of snow in the air. Of course, there was no snow in the air. But, it felt as if there could be.
The neighborhood waited most of the morning for it to happen. By noon we were all sitting in front of the television waiting for the next promise to come across the screen. Not more than 30 minutes had passed when my husband called me to the front door. “It’s snowing!”
Well, I tried not to get too excited about it. We have seen flurries before. But, the last big snow was in March of 1993. It stopped everything for a week. In the south a foot of snow actually can freeze time and space and stop just about everything that would ordinarily be moving.
I tried to contain myself. However, as the afternoon progressed I found myself pressing my nose against the glass in the front door. Finally, when I could no longer see the town below I knew it was a real snow. By four o’clock most of the grass was covered and although I couldn’t find anything with which to measure — except a pen — I have now estimated that we have at the minimum 4″ in the front yard and in some parts of the back yard we have at least 6″.
Oliver was having a rather difficult time with it this afternoon. Of course, it finally occurred to me that this very well could be Oliver’s first snow — at least his first snow of substance. He came to eat but was constantly distracted by that dang flake that had perched on his back. It wouldn’t melt. And, every time Ollie turned to lick it, his body turned farther and faster than his front end. Well, after a few turns he decided that the weight of the flake was not breaking his back so he decided to eat.
A little later when I went out back Ollie was making his way across the drive, obviously confused by having to wade through that wet stuff that reached he elbows. I don’t know what frightened him but as he was about to walk past the front of the car he was spooked. He tried to jump onto the hood of the car, but created a mini-avalanche as he slid off the front with a mound of snow piling on top of him. He darted and I haven’t seen him since.
The kids actually got to bring out the make believe sleds. The snow is too wet to create much of a sliding surface, but they gave it a try. By tomorrow if the temperature drops tonight I suppose they will be able to slide down the hill.
Oh, well. I know very few of the readers can probably get so excited about falling white stuff. But, living in the south, for all its good points, has little snow. And, when we do, it is a day of celebration and fun.
Time to make the hot chocolate. Glad I bought marshmallows this morning. So, tonight I am thankful for a beautiful day of snow and a good cup of hot chocolate with marshmallows.

Hi, the very funny and crazy thing knowing that I am sitting up in the arctic, is that I am actually envious on you ! we are longing for more snow here since we have it very cold without much snow, resulting in incredible icy streets, to such an extent that even young people have spikes on and being cautious when they walk down the mountains to catch the bus instead of just sliding down and yesterday there should have been an out door concert with a lot of young people playing in marching bands, but they canceled it due to the cold weather ! and the weather forecast predict it will last 2 weeks with very cold weather, so here are hot chocolate and scones the perfect thing to survive !
Niels,
I would send you the slush if I could. Today was above freezing in the afternoon and everything is melting. Let me just say that the snow — where it is not tracked up or turned to ice — is sinking due to melting beneath. Another laugh for today for me, the snow reminds me of a fat woman’s butt with dimpled cellulite. Maybe that is a comment that Laury would better understand, although she is thin as a rail.
Anyway, the winter mix stuff was not all that impressive. Tomorrow we will be back to normal or pretty much. Haven’t had a scone in so long that I’m the one who is envious now. Going to look for a proper recipe. Sounds good with hot chocolate!
Hope you guys get snow soon. Ice is not fun, although I did get to wear my golf shoes for the first time this year. The idea of spikes you mentioned was clever. Only cleats I have are on the golf shoes, so…. Actually, took a golf club along for balance on the stone steps. Neighbors thought I was crazy but this afternoon I noticed most of them in golf shoes, too.
Enjoy the scones and hot chocolate!
