Time Out for a Little Gratitude

by Maya on August 13, 2008

I am thankful that my life for the past few days has been so full that I haven’t had time to log onto the computer… and NO!  I didn’t have any sort of computer withdrawal symptoms.  But, it is good to be back today.

Sometimes life comes so fast that we don’t take the time to share our thoughts of gratitude.  That’s where I have been.  I have felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude, but I haven’t taken the time to express it in words.

The neighborhood kids have just about run us old folks ragged since Saturday.  Learning to pace oneself is a life lesson that the youngsters haven’t learned.  Perhaps, they have enough energy to keep going at record pace without a break.  I’m just thankful that school started!

To catch up on the past few days… The kids have insinuated themselves into our lives obviously.  That’s a good thing.  The exchange of new energy for old folks’ experience has proved to be a good trade.  And, it has put a little pressure on those of us who are accustomed to a somewhat slower daily routine.

At 6:30 this morning… before school… two of the kids showed up in my back yard to “borrow” my meditation spot.  I couldn’t believe it.  I walked out into the yard to find the twosome struggling to get into the lotus position.  It does take practice.  And, quite honestly, I wasn’t sure those young ladies had ever known silence.  They seem to chatter incessantly.  But, this morning they were calm and quiet as they awaited my arrival.

One of the interesting things about these two is that they don’t ask for instruction.  They watch and copy.  That worked out really well for me this morning.  By 7:30 they were off to school.  And, I was off to have a morning cup of coffee in the solitude of my kitchen.

I’m not sure if the kids are a project we older people have taken on or if we are a project they have assumed.  Either way, it is an interesting relationship.

Yesterday, one of the older boys stopped by the house on his way home.  He was heavily laden with new text books, showing off all the knowledge he hopes to gain this year.  One of the girls who is a senior this year rushed home from school to accompany Mrs. Hildebrand to a doctor’s appointment.  And three of the kids showed up at Happy’s to work in the greenhouse.

One of the boys has downloaded an instruction manual on building a solar panel.  He, along with three others, spent a couple of hours after school going over the instructions with my husband.

Something is brewing and I’m not quite sure what it is yet.  But, I do get the sense that the kids have an unknown (to us) project in the making.  It’s going to be interesting to see what transpires.

But, for now, I am thankful for time out to watch the Olympics and to add to my Gratitude Journal.  And, by the way, aren’t we proud of our team in Beijing?
